The Effects of Sowing Date and Shade on Seedling Growth of Acacia seyal (var. seyal) in Kordofan, Sudan

Abstract
The study was conducted in the season 2016-2017 to assess the effect of sowing date and shade on seedling performance of Acacia seyal var. seyal. The experiment was carried out at the Nursery of the Institute of Gum Arabic Research and Desertification Studies, University of Kordofan, El Obeid, Sudan. The experimental design used was the Complete Block Design (CBD) method where three different sowing dates replicated four times, this was conducted under direct sun light and under shade, and the experimental unit consists of 240 seedlings. The performance of seedlings was measured (length, collar diameter and number of leaves), during the four period sowing. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was applied using SAS statistical software version 6.12 (SAS Institute Inc., 1996). Study results showed that the Length and number of leaves were very high significant affected by the sowing date as well as shade/sunlight (p = 0.0001). October10th recorded the longest seedling shoot length (18.9 cm) and recorded positive (R2 = 0.8972), root collar diameter (4.7 mm); (R2 = 0.5986). However, The Seedlings under shade recorded the longest seedling length (16.8 cm). There is a rapid acclimatization and establishment of seedlings that were planted outside the shade and this is evidenced by the increase in the number of leaves for these seedlings, and these are advantages of plantation establishment for their dependence on photosynthesis.
