Abstract
Thirty-two (32) growing buck rabbits with an average weight of 1366.56±37.54g, were used to assess the effects of inclusion of different dietary concentrations of Cerium oxide (CeO), a Rare Earth Element, at 0, 50, 100, 150 mg on haematology, serum biochemistry and growth performance. The initial weight, feed intake and final weight of the animals were determined. Blood samples were collected on the last day of the experiment for hematological and serum biochemical analyses. The results showed no significant influence of dietary cerium oxide on serum biochemical parameters and haematology (except for packed cell volume, white blood cell and monocyte) while the daily feed intake, feed conversion ratio, final live and the daily weight gain were significantly (P<0.05) increased. The final, total and daily weight gains were at the peak at 100 mg inclusion of dietary cerium oxide as well as feed conversion ratio, indicating that dietary REE at 50-150 mg concentration is capable of improving the body weight gain, daily dry matter intake and feed conversion ratio without any detrimental effect on the blood parameters; a pointer to good health status of the animals.
