Analysis of Food Security and Poverty Status Among Rural Farming Households in Idah Local Government Area of Kogi State, Nigeria

Abstract
Abstract on the analysis of food security and poverty status of rural households in Kogi State, Nigeria. The population for this study comprised of all farming households in Idah local government area of Kogi state. A multi-stage random sampling technique was utilized. A total of one hundred and twenty (120) respondents were utilized for analysis in the study. Primary data was used for the study. The data was elicited using structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Cost of calorie function, FGT analysis and logit regression model. The Result revealed that 46.7 percent and 53.3 percent of the households were food secure and insecure respectively. The result also showed that 59.7percent and 40.3 percent of the households were non-poor and poor respectively. Logit regression model was used to determine the relationship between food security and poverty status of the respondents. The model was made up of seven explanatory variables. The regression result showed age, level of formal education, household size and membership of association were found to determine the food security status of farming households in the study area. Poverty among the rural farming households was however not a key contributor to the households’ food security. The study concluded that policy makers and relevant stakeholders should take into cognizance these determinants in the formulation of policies or interventions.
