Sodium (Na) and potassium (K) are essential trace minerals, plays an important role in health and disease conditions, and studies about them have been attracting significant interest. The aim of the present study was to assess the Na and K concentration in selected common food samples available in the Sri Lankan market. Sri Lankan consumes too much salt (Na and K) which contribute to hypertension. Through this study, analysed the Na and K content of 117 of food samples from markets, generally representative of commonly consumed in Sri Lanka. The sample prepared using microwave assisted accelerated system and analysed by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS). Meat and fish contained high concentrations of Na (13.95±6.81 g/kg) and K (8.54±5.30 g/kg). Considering the average Na concentration of studied food groups, the reference amount was below the regulated value. However, it is necessary to close monitoring and awareness program to reduce the Na consumption, for optimizing the dietetic management of blood pressure in the Sri Lankan population.
