Abstract
Cancer is one of the main causes of death in dogs, with breast carcinoma being one of the most prevalent and associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Cytopathology provides a fast and reliable diagnosis, which requires a specialized team. In this sense, ROSE protocol allows the examination to be even more efficient, since in addition to fast staining of the slide, pathologist's analysis is performed immediately after the collection, which allows a new collection to be performed if the number of cells is insufficient or the technique has failed. This study was conducted to collect information regarding quality control in the diagnosis of canine mammary tumors, especially those about the ROSE Protocol, to provide a research tool in compared oncology and promote the implementation of effective diagnostic approaches. For this, survey in the archives of the Veterinary Hospital at UNESP, Botucatu, Brazil and literature review about the use of ROSE Protocol, especially on canine mammary tumors, as well as quality control, clinical advancements, advantages and difficulties of this technique were conducted. 14% of cytopathological assays conducted were injuries involved mammary glands and the use of ROSE protocol amplified the sensitivity and specificity of these diagnosis and in other organs. Furthermore, it reduces the necessity to repeats the procedure and, therefore, the costs. The results showed significant differences about quality control in scientific studies when comparing the adequacy results of studies with and without ROSE Protocol and when assessing the cost/benefit ratio of the technique. However, it requires experience operators and it is crucial that further analyses will be conducted to determine the real merits of this diagnostic technique.
