Abstract
Antioxidants have been shown to have protective effects against inflammation and oxidative stress, also healthy body weight is an important indicator towards prevention of diseases. This study was carried out to report the odds of low antioxidants vitamins (A, E and C) in underweight, normal and overweight adolescents. Dietary assessment was conducted using 24 hour dietary recall and biochemical assay of vitamin A, E and C were carried out using a High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Our findings revealed the overall energy intake (EI) to be higher (p<0.05) among male (2014.4±194.6kcal) than their female (1441.1±169.3kcal) counterparts. Mean antioxidant vitamins A (15.55±6.14 vs 15.74±6.33µg/dl), E (253.48±25.99 vs 251.69±25.35µg/dl) and C (5.00±2.41 vs 4.80±2.28 µg/dl) for female and male subjects showed significant difference (p<0.05). Age and BMI have weak associations (r = 0.18, p<0.05) with vitamin A, E & C status. Moderate and severe deficiency of antioxidant vitamins exist among our study population irrespective of their age groups. This deficiency is of public health importance. Therefore, there is urgent need for public enlightenment and provision of supplements to avert the scourges of vitamins deficiency.
