Enhancing ICT in Nigerian Higher Education Institutions: Issues and Insight

Though it has been rightly pronounced that what is wrong with education cannot be fixed with technology; there is no doubt that modern life is dominated by technology. There is a universal recognition that emphasized the need to use information and communication technology (ICT) in higher education as we enter the era of globalization where the dissemination of information and knowledge. It is obvious that ICT is still in the imagining phase in Nigerian higher institutions compared to similar investments made in other sectors of the economy. It is observed that delivery of knowledge and curriculum are not fully ICT enhanced. This paper discuss ICT in its dimension: how it really transforms higher education, its status Government efforts in providing internet facilities and suggests ways for improvement. This paper also explored various applications of ICT in teaching/ learning, and research in Nigerian higher institutions. The conclusion of the paper draws that although ICT is relevant to all aspects of higher institutions, it has not being widely integrated in teaching/ learning process, and research in Nigerian higher institutions. It was therefore recommended that lecturers should be given professional development training, so that they can integrate ICT in their institutional assignments.
