Romantic Movies and Social Skills Development of Secondary School Students in a Multi-Cultural Environment: Implication for Social Studies Teachers

Abstract
One criticism often leveled against the media is that they are contributing to the decay of morality. Children find stories about violence, sexual activities, promiscuity, theft and aggression in a variety of media outlets, including fictional programming. The media presents to its viewers even at odd times romantic and love saturated movies. Many people are therefore of the opinion that romantic movies have come to destroy the social development of our secondary school students. Hence, the purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of romantic movies on the social development of secondary school students in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The study was based on the theory of intended behavior by Ivor Morrish. Related literature was reviewed and data collected through an instrument developed by the researchers for the study. The data generated were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The t-test statistics was used to test the null hypothesis. The result indicated that romantic movies have a significant influence on the social development secondary school students in Uyo metropolis of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. Based on this, recommendations were made with implications to the social studies teachers.
