The Influence of “Sahabat Ibu Balita” Application on Mother’s Obedience in Monitoring 12-18 Month-old Child’s Growth and Development

Abstract
Twelve until eighteen months are parts of the first one thousand days of life. It has been commonly known that the period of the first two years of life is a critical period. A number of methods have been employed in the effort of preventing any impaired growth and development of 12- to 18-month-old children. One of the methods is using the medium of maternal and child health book frequently utilized in monitoring the growth and development of 12- to 18-month-old children. However, the medium used for detection and the guidance for stimulating growth and development have not been used due to various factors. To address this issue, an alternative strategy is needed, which is using the application of Sahabat Ibu Balita (literally translated into Friend of Under-five’s Mother Application) as a medium for monitoring child’s growth and development via Android smartphones. The aim of this research is to analyze the effect of the implementation of application of Sahabat Ibu Balita on the conformity of mothers in monitoring the growth and development of 12- to 18-month-old children. This research used Quasi Experimental design with pretest-posttest control group design. The target population of this research was mothers who had 12- to 18-month-old children in November 2016 who met the inclusion criteria in the working area of Public Health Center Babakan Sari Kiaracondong, Bandung. The samples of this research were 38 pregnant mothers in each group, who were selected using simple random sampling technique. The results showed that in the intervention group 84.21% mothers who showed conformity in monitoring child’s growth and development, whereas the control group 42.10% and based on statistical analysis showed mothers who showed conformity in monitoring child’s growth and development the group who did not application of Sahabat Ibu Balita at risk for not abiding by 3.6 times compared to the group given application of Sahabat Ibu Balita and significant difference between the intervention group and the control group with p value <0,05. The application of Sahabat Ibu Balita has the advantage that contain complete information, interesting, able to record the interaction between mother and midwife and animated images that can improve the knowledge and skills of the mother so that the mother dutifully in monitoring the growth and development of 12- to 18-month-old children.
