Abstract
The evidence supporting the association between breakfast consumption and body weight is growing. Breakfast skipping habit and consuming more energy dense snack might be associated with obesity; however the results from previous research are still inconclusive. The Study aim to describe the association between breakfast consumption habit and snacking behaviors with the body mass index (BMI) among UQU students from female. A cross sectional study was conducted among 200 from medical college in UQU. A self-administered questionnaire was used which included close ended questions on socio demography, eating habits. Family income level of participants were significantly associated with frequency of having breakfast (P=0.04). Frequency of having snack showed significant correlation when correlated to participants, family education levels, occupation and income level. Highly significant correlation was found between participants who consume breakfast and their BMI. Regarding some dietary habits and believes related to breakfast, because of the busy schedule the participants not having breakfast (31.5%). The most frequent time of eating breakfast at 8-10 AM was (41%) while the least frequent at After 12 PM (3%). Regarding the places of eating breakfast, we found that, the participants those had breakfast at university and having breakfast with friends represent in our study (33%, 48.5% respectively). The study concluded that the educational level of parents and the income level of the family all have significant effect on the type and frequency of breakfast and snack, which in turn has had a significant effect on the body mass index of the participants.
