Abstract
In eastern Nigeria, fresh leaves of Spondiasmombin are widely used by the natives to aid delivery and to expel the placenta in small ruminants (sheep and goats), especially during difficult labor. In this study anti-diarrhea activity was evaluated in Swiss albino rats weighing between 45-51g; grouped into five groups of six rats. Group I (negative control; normal saline 10mL), group II (positive control;Loperamide 10mg/kg), groups III, IV and V were administered with methanol extracts doses of 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg b.w respectively. The weights of defecations were recorded as well as %inhibition of defecation in order to evaluate the anti-diarrheal activity in castor oil induced diarrhea in albino rats. From the study, the extract exhibited anti-diarrhea activity at dose dependent fashion of 60,70 and 80% at doses of 100, 200, and 400mg/kg b.w respectively. These values were compared to the standard drug Loperamide at p<0.05 and p<0.01 (ANOVA). Our study showed that the leaf of S. mombin can be used as an anti-diarrhea ethnomedicinal drug, and thus represents a newsource towards drug discovering.
