Abstract
Samples were collected along the stream channel of Jakara, Salanta and Watari, and analyzed by the use of Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). The result of the analysis shows that there is variation in the concentration of the heavy metals between Jakara and Salanta studied sites and all mean concentration values of the heavy metals under investigation were found to be lower in Watari (Control site) than that of Jakara and Salanta which is attributed to the fact that the soil of the area was contaminated by industrial and domestic activities. The mean value of all metals under investigation have not reach the level that could caused any immediate threat as all the metals were found to be significantly lower than the European Union Regulatory value with exception of cadmium in Jakara (3.03 mg/kg) which is slightly above the European Union Regulatory value. Serious action is required to reduce the level of the contamination from industrial operation, domestic and automobile by reducing application of waste through treating the industrial and domestic waste before discharge and avoiding linkage between domestic sewage drainage and rivers that conveyed the irrigation water, also there is need to increases the pH and regular monitoring the rate of accumulation of the metals in the areas.
