Abstract
The leaves of Palicourea croceiodes (Rubiaceae) were extracted with chloroform using the cold maceration method and were subjected to chemical, microbiological and spectroscopic analysis. Column chromatographic separation of the extract led to the isolation of a compounds, CE1.2.1, (Rf=0.78), identified as Squalene (2,6,10,14,19,23-Hexamethyl-2,6,10,14,18,22-tetracosahexa-ene), a light yellow oil, IR (KBr) Vmax: 1640, 2939, 1379, 2967cm-1. NMR (CDCl3) data revealed quartenary carbon, methyl carbon, methylene carbon, methyl, methylene and methine protons; The crude ethyl acetate leaf extract and isolated ethyl acetate fraction were screened for antimicrobial activities using Agar well diffusion method against selected microorganisms which include Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumonia, Klebsiella aerogenes, E. coli, Proteus mirabilis, Enterobacter aerogenes, Candida albican and Aspergillus niger. The isolated compound was found to exhibit selective activities against some of the organisms with Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of between 0.0625mg/ml and 0.25mg/ml and a Minimum Bactericidal Concentration of (MBC) of 0.0313mg/ml and 0.25mg/ml. The study justified the use of the plant as an antibiotic in ethno-medical applications and can be used for the development of new drugs for the wellbeing of people.
