Abstract
A study on insect fauna in a fallow plot at Awka was carried using pitfall trapping technique. The study was carried out during the rainy season for a period of seven weeks in the months of May and June 2011. The pitfall traps containing orange flavour essence as killing agent were used in trapping the insects. The pitfall traps were used to investigate the efficacy of the orange flavour essence in trapping insects in the study site. A total of 664 adults and 224 larvae insects were collected from the traps respectively. From the overall results, seven insect orders, twenty-two families and twenty-five species were found to be associated with the orange flavor essence in the fallow plot in Awka during the study period. The activities of adult insects in the fallow plot were high with Hymenoptera having the highest relative abundance (41.57%) while Isopoda (0.30%) had the least. In contrast, the activities of the larval stages of insects in the fallow plot were high with Orthoptera having the highest relative abundance (97.77%) while Coleoptera (0.89%) had the least. The orange flavour essence influenced the presence and capturing of insect species from the traps. The foraging activities, use of the attractant as food and oviposition resources also contributed to both adult and larval insects catches.
