Socialisation Agents’ Task in Early Career Guidance/Counselling and Rousing Students’ Interest to Arts/Humanities

The rising parents’ and students’ poor interest in Arts/Humanities courses results from the near-absence of early career guidance and counselling, which thus allows misinformation, misconception and poor orientation about these fields to continuously thrive. Through early career guidance and counselling, they would become well informed about the numerous career opportunities in these fields and get interested in them. For example, many, who perceive Philosophy and Linguistics as difficult courses with only teaching career opportunities for their graduates, and misconceive the philosopher as a pagan or an esoteric professional, and the linguist as a mere polyglot, would become familiar with them and others, and thus take due interest in them. Since language use and critical thinking are inevitable for all fields, philosophers and linguists can aptly fit into all sectors. This paper calls for early career guidance and counselling, proper and adequate (re) orientation of parents, students and the masses, educating them on the real truth about and the place of Arts/Humanities in academics, career opportunities and societal development. Basically, the study relied on both primary and secondary data along with the suitable plausible techniques, and reveals that schools, family and media are majorly responsible for the dearth of interest in Arts/Humanities. It blames them for their failed responsibility, misguiding many students into other courses, where they lack the prowess, all for one flimsy reason or the other. Therefore, early career guidance and counselling is the panacea for the problem. Guidance and Counselling Unit should be established and effectively run in schools of all tiers. And, students should be allowed to pursue their self-chosen (favourite) courses across all faculties without contempt.
